Scientists
have debated for years whether or not there is water on the red planet,
Mars. They have determined that it is
possible for water to have existed on the planet because they have discovered
brines, highly concentrated salt water deposits. This poses the question if
Mars now or has ever before been able to sustain life. Could these brines suggest
that life could have existed on Mars just as the Earth today? Or is this just
another misconception?
7. This article doesn't seem to actually do anything in my opinion. This story has been beat to death, and it keeps coming up. With all the stories and discoveries in space, I don't understand why the story about water on Mars is brought up like it is new information.
ReplyDelete7. I don't think this post has any effect on there values. This is a straight forward scientific article. This topic is an old topic so you will probably have an opinion formulated by now but if you are new to the whole topic of life on mars your knowledge and ideas could be influenced. As for the discussion question I think these brines could suggest that life could be on Mars like Earth today but the technology to allow that to happen is very far off in the future so as of present day scientists are just giving common people the idea that we could go live on mars right now when in reality that is impossible.

ReplyDelete7 - This post has absolutely no effect on MOST people's knowledge, values, etc. The article includes quotes from a promient member of the scientific community (McEwen) and even HE agrees that this entire concept is a mystery. Knowing the general public, and judging from the classmates that answered before me, this article has absolutely no effect. It is story that has been discussed and debated on countless occassions. On the other hand, I'm sure there are a handful of people out there that took this article as factual evidence for the existence of aliens (since water sustains life). In which case, this article actually did accomplish something by further hyping up alien paranoia.
ReplyDelete7 - I'm not one to jump on the band wagon but, the previous responses are correct. This article does not effect people's knowledge. Everyone has heard about the possibility of life on Mars. Yes, there have been traces of H20, as we have heard from other articles and websites. Now they are finding brines, which only adds more to the equation. There are some things that have been proven and well-understood, but the rest of it is mere speculation.
ReplyDelete7 - I agree with everyone else. This article discusses information that has already been presented in the past. In my opinion and apparently the opinion of my classmates, this article provides no no effect on the general public's knowledge. The reason this article has no effect is because it has already been heard. Although data suggests that they may have found brines, nothing definite can be gleaned from this article. However, that's not to say that actual finding may not provide insight into life on other planets.
ReplyDelete1. The article try to prove the existence of life on Mars through the images observed from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It first illustrate the appearance of seasonal changes of the dark, finger-like feature, which brings out the existence of briny water according to Alfred McEwen. Although a lot of things are still miserable, the liquid of briny water can let us know the truth that "Saltiness lowers the freezing temperature of water". we can also testify it from the images of which showed warm-season features that might be evidence of salty liquid water active today on Mars. In addition, a new type of finding which related with salt and water should be detected and analyzed well after detailed observation an laboratory experiments. This has lead to the page of finding new source and make an direction and advance in the detection of Mars.
ReplyDeleteDue to the question of whether this article is a misconception, in my point of view, it is hard to judge whether it is wrong according to one piece of material and the finding that has not proved deeply.
7. I also don’t think this post actually does anything. In other words, this article seems rarely have effect on most people’s knowledge and ideas, because, first of all, most people have been already familiar with what this article is discussing (for example, water-like liquid or “flow of briny water”) or know some similar news, except people who know nothing about Mars. It is becoming a common sense that many sciences would keen on finding liquid water in the Mars, because they think finding water means high possibility of life existence. Second of all, the discoveries in this article, whatever types of liquid or relevance to water, are not so fresh to the audiences, even though they are the latest findings. Further, if this article was discussing about finding Trilobita-like living beings, then I believe most of people would be amazed by this article, and they would regard the article as bringing effect on people’s knowledge, values, and ideas.
ReplyDeleteSince we are doing thesis practice these days, I notice that the author use some strong logic relation between each main idea to make a claim, such as in para.5, “some aspects of the observations still puzzle researchers, but flows of liquid brine fit the features' characteristics better than alternate hypotheses”, as well as some comma rules. Thus, even though information in this article brings not so many fresh ideas, it still has some value helping us to practice thinking analytically.
7. I would have to agree with the comments so far in saying that this article does not have any affect on people's knowledge and values. The author basically reiterates the fact that it has not been FULLY proven that fresh water has/does exist on Mars. Although the author brought "brines" to the readers' attention, that new information did not have an affect on my previous knowledge.
ReplyDelete7. I have to agree with my classmates. This is the same old story that we have been hearing for our entire lives. Yes they have seen things that could lead to there being signs of life on Mars but until they can actually prove that there is water on Mars thenmaybe people can speculate whether or not there is life on Mars. But with this article i just feel that we havent moved off of square on with this whole thing. Until scientists can prove that there is water we will always continue to feel the same. But this is a small step into figuring out the bigger picture.
ReplyDelete5) Although this story has been "beaten to death," try to think outside of the box on this one. Stories like this will continue to be written for the rest of our lives. This is something that most people wonder about and many people dedicate their careers to figure out. If there is truly life on another planet, it could mean countless numbers of things. The author is strictly reporting facts and asking the reader to wonder some more. That is basically the most you can get out of these scientific articles. When more and more people begin to believe that there could be life on planet Mars, it becomes a bigger deal. This was a significant stepping stone in causing many people to wonder. The writer simply asks for your opinion on this article, and does not position herself as an extreme believer.
ReplyDelete7. I am also going to have to agree with pretty much the majority of the class. As we have heard many times, it is possible for there to be life or was at one point life on Mars. The author does not influence the reader in any ways. It just continues to state that water was found on Mars and that it is possible that life could survive. This is the same old thing that we have always heard. Its no new evidence or new claims that this article really proves or supports.
ReplyDelete7. I agree with the majority of my classmates. I do not think that this article does much of anything. For years, there have been reports about possible river beds on mars, proof that there has been water etc. There is not really any new evidence that the author presents to show anything of substance. Also, the author does not make any claims that are new to the reader. He simply tells us what we already know.
ReplyDelete7. I am also going to agree that this article is pretty pointless. I dont believe you can be older than 10 years old and not hear about the life on Mars theories. Everyone knows about it and knows both sides. Some scientists say yes, and some say no. It does not provide any knowledge because everyone already knows all about it. It does not express any values because it is strictly a scientific article with no emotion whatsoever. The only ideas developed are water on Mars, and water not on Mars. I got bored very quickly with this article.

7. The article does present new information to the water on mars theory. This could effect peoples peoples opinions on whether or not they believe there is water on mars. Although as previously stated by many classmates most people already have an idea about whether there could be life on mars or not, so this article could be pointless in that aspect. The article also does not effect peoples values, unless they now believe there is life on mars and are strong in religious beliefs. As far as I know most major religions do not endorse the idea of life beyond earth, but not being religious myself I would not know for sure. So over all this article does little to attempt to change peoples opinions and continues to speculate about whether or not there is water on Mars.
